Sanctuary: A Turning Leaf

  • Smith Square Hall London SW1P 3HA (map)
A black background, with an autumnal leaf twisting across, revealing the faint view of a choir performing at Smith Square

In a world that moves ever faster, step into a space where music, movement, silence, and human connection are given room to breathe.

Introducing Sanctuary, an experience where listening becomes a shared act of reflection and gathering. Step into our Hall, listen deeply, let your imagination wander, or simply rest and restore.

In A Turning Leaf, cellist Matthew Barley, pianist Mishka Rushdie Momen and The Purcell Singers are joined by Nadia Mullova-Barley and Liam Boswell (soloists from The Royal Ballet) in a candlelit experience where music and movement are intertwined. From the deep spirituality of Arvo Pärt to the innovations of JS Bach, John Cage and more, the programme traces a path through stillness, transformation, and wonder.

The performance will last approximately 90 minutes with no interval.

Programme to include:

  • Alfred Schnittke Three Sacred Hymns

  • Arvo Pärt Spiegel im Spiegel

  • Robert Schumann Three Romances for Cello and Piano, Op. 94

  • Veljo Tormis Cold Autumn Night

  • and an original work by Matthew Barley
